How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c.
